Director Of Nursing (D.O.N.)

The D.O.N. is expected to contribute to direct patient care while also attending to their administrative duties. A facility’s D.O.N. will maintain managerial authority over the entire clinical staff. As the title suggests, the D.O.N. needs to possess expertise in both clinical and administrative duties, including direct patient care and staff management, respectively. An effective nurse manager is organized and competently harnesses the assistance of facility personnel to accomplish daily, monthly, quarterly, bi-annual, and annual tasks.

The D.O.N. will help alleviate some of the administrator’s burden by handling the administrative and hiring responsibilities of clinical staff, as well as monitoring the use of technologies and devices and corresponding reimbursement. The D.O.N. will be in close conversation with physicians and can adeptly advocate for the use of more cost-effective technologies and devices. The D.O.N. will manage their staff members, technologies and devices, and to operate with autonomy.

  • Responsible for the operations and function of the perioperative services within the surgery center, including the operating rooms, central sterile processing, materials management under the direction of the Director and Office Manager. 
  • Manage the overall flow of the OR schedule, fulfill staffing needs, and enhance cost efficiency. 
  • Hone and deliver their leadership skills to create a collaborative environment for their staff and patients focusing on team and business development.
  • Assists with developing specific departmental goals, standards, and objectives which directly support the strategic plan and vision of the organization.
  • Manages staff relations including performance management, staff satisfaction, and conflict management. Performs and oversees scheduling, recruitment and payroll.
  • Monitors departmental budgets, regulatory compliance (including bi-annual state licensing inspections, renewal of accreditation with AAA HC, and quality reporting), departmental contracts, and vendor relations. Determines and justifies needs for systems/equipment/supplies purchases, monitors usage, and oversees proper working order and/or stock supplies.
  • Assesses the quality of patient care delivered and coordinates patient care services with patients, staff, physicians, and other departments.
  • Management of general ledger (Quick Book), including accounts payable, bank reconciliations, and financial reporting for the surgery center.
  • Operational management, working with the Director, Office Manager and Billing Manager, to ensure optimal experience for surgeons and patients, and overall Center efficiency
  • RN/BSN
  • Minimum of five years of operating room experience, to include responsibility for regulatory compliance. 
  • Strong preference will be given to applicants who have demonstrated ability to work in a fast-paced environment and strong clinical and managerial competency.
  • 3 years of progressive leadership experience.
  • Preferred: Master’s degree in nursing or related field.
  • BLS through the American Heart Association or the American Red Cross CPR for the Professional Rescuer with card in-hand before start date. BLS or CPR card must be good through sixty days of hire. All life support certification cards must be issued by either the American Heart Association or the American Red Cross CPR for the Professional Rescuer. (American Red Cross for the Professional Rescuer is only good upon hire and all renewals will need to be through an American Heart Association sanctioned course.)
  • ACLS certificate 

Within scope of job, requires critical thinking skills, decisive judgement and the ability to work with minimal supervision. Must be able to work in a fast-paced environment and take appropriate action.
