The Surgical Counselor / Nurse Injector provides chair-side doctor assistance and administers treatment ordered by the doctor. This includes assisting the patient with all aspects of pre-operative preparations and post-operative care in order to promote confidence in their medical care thereby making the surgical experience as smooth as possible.

Specific Duties And Responsibilities

  • *Prepares exam rooms, escorts patients to room and prepares them for doctor.
  • *Provides elective care for cosmetic complaints that can be reasonably treated with injection procedures.
  • *Takes medical histories, performs examinations, and develops a treatment plan within their scope of practice for cosmetic patients and treatment administration as directed by their supervising physician.
  • *Ensures staff provides high quality, accessible, cost effective care, and patient focused services to members across the continuum, which comply with local, state and federal requirements.
  • *Maintains clinical standards of care and practice.
  • *Ensures proper charting; acts as scribe for physician.
  • *Sets up proper instrumentation.
  • *Assists in minor surgery and laser procedures.
  • *Formulates and obtains proper informed consents.
  • *Performs follow up exams.
  • *Escorts patients to front desk after exam.
  • *Provides prospective patients with extensive consultation concerning surgical and non-surgical procedures.
  • *Answers patient questions about what they should anticipate before and after surgery or treatment.
  • *Serves as liaison between the patient, surgeons, primary care physician, and the surgical facility in all aspects of pre-operative preparations
  • *Make a clear explanation of the need for a physical exam, including lab work, EKG, chest x-ray, other pre-operative tests as determined by the surgeon, and review informed consent form.
  • *Scheduled all pre-operative appointments (as applicable) for the patients with their primary care physicians, hospitals, clinics, and labs when surgery is decided.
  • *Answers all telephone inquiries from patients, their families, or primary care physicians concerning surgery and/or related concerns.
  • *Prepares and mails the pre-operative surgical packet so the patient will have it in time to take it to all pre-operative appointments.
  • *One week prior to surgery, makes sure the charts have been prepared with admit and/or post-op orders, surgical dictation, and check for any complications, such as medical conditions noted on the surgical sheet.
  • *Ensure appropriate follow-up with the patient post-operatively.
  • *Provides direct patient care as a representative of the physician, treating the patient in a style and manner developed and directed by the supervising physician and consistent with authorized practice as defined by state law
  • *Delivers care in accordance with mutually agreed upon guidelines that are developed by the physician and RN and based on the physician’s delegatory style.
  • *Limits their involvement in the assessment and implementation of treatment to agreed upon procedures including but not limited to injection therapy, taking into consideration their training, experience, and preparation of the RN.
  • *Responsible for the coordination of retention correspondence to patients regarding their follow-up treatment plan
  • *Maintains the patient’s medical records detailing all treatment procedures, medication history, and educational materials distributed.
  • *Confirms with patients their clear understanding that a registered nurse is treating them.
  • *Reviews with the supervising physician all delegated patient services on a regular basis, as well as mutually agreed guidelines for the practice.
  • *Clarifies and familiarizes all issues related to supervision methods and style of delegating patient care with the supervising physician.
  • *Maintains treatment rooms and work areas in compliance with OSHA standards.
  • *Maintains inventory-tracking system for all injectable products. Orders and stocks inventory and supplies as needed.
  • *Cleans and restocks all treatment rooms between patients, including cleaning sinks and equipment.
  • *Checks that all equipment is where it belongs.
  • *At the end of the day, turns off power to all equipment and covers equipment as needed.
  • *Establishes, implements, and maintains patient care and service standards to meet members and internal clients’ expectations.
  • *Designs and evaluates processes to improve systems and patient care results across the continuum of care.
  • *Determines the appropriate staff mix for procedures and maintain the competency of the staff.
  • *Ensures on-going staff development
  • Attends Company and industry-related meetings, as required.
  • Establishes individual goals which are aligned with the Company’s business strategies and objectives.
  • Functions as a contributing member of the department’s team and other teams, as assigned.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by executive leadership.

working environment and conditions

  • The work environment is in a clinical setting.
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
  • This job is designated as a Category I job using OSHA definitions. This means there are tasks that involve exposure to blood or other potentially infectious material. Use of appropriate protective measures is required for any employee engaged in Category I tasks.
  • Ability to work as a team member.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.


  • RN degree required; cosmetic surgical experience preferred.
  • One to two years of aesthetic/plastic surgery experience preferred.
  • BLS, CPR certification
  • ACLS certificate required
  • Knowledge of medical, cosmetic and skin care treatment and pathology
  • Knowledge of Nurse Practice Act and other local, state and federal regulations.

  • Specific vision abilities required by this position include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, and the ability to adjust focus.
